Recycling is an essential part of Singapore's sustainability efforts. However, as the Minister of Environment Ms Grace Fu mentions, "we continue to face challenges with the contamination of the recyclables". Therefore, let us talk about the issue of recycling contamination, and how to recycle correctly in Singapore.

What is Recycling Contamination?

Recycling contamination occurs when non-recyclable items or improperly managed recyclables are placed in recycling bins. Contamination from these items can cause batches of recyclables to not be suitable for processing, causing increased waste.

This is a pressing concern in Singapore, as a report in 2022 showed that 40% of items in our blue recycling bins are non-recyclable due to contamination - instances include food and liquid waste, tissue paper and others.

Consequences of Contamination

The implications of recycling contamination are significant:

  • Increased Waste: By contaminating the batch of recyclables, it reduces the number of items that can eventually be recycled.
  • Resource Inefficiency: Existing waste management processes would have to put in the work to handle the contaminated waste.

How to Recycle Correctly in Singapore

To minimize contamination and enhance recycling effectiveness, consider the following guidelines:

  1. Set Up a Recycling Corner at Home: Set up your own recycling bin next to your rubbish bin, to separate recyclables from general waste.

  2. Clean and Dry Recyclables: Make sure that all recyclables are free from food and liquid residues, by rinsing and drying your items.

  3. Donate Reusable Items: Items in good condition, such as clothing and toys, should be donated rather than discarded.

  4. Know What Can and Cannot Be Recycled: The team at recycle.gov.sg has created a simple function to find the nearest recycling facility to you. Simply key in your item, and we will let you know whether it is recyclable, and the nearest facility to your location that can recycle it!

By following these steps, you can help us move towards a more sustainable and green environment!

Conclusion

Understanding the issue of contamination is a great first step to reducing this issue. By consciously reducing our contamination, everyone can play a part in creating a cleaner, greener future.
